CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team fell to UT Martin and Saint Louis on the second day of the Chattanooga Frost Classic Saturday.
Game 1 | UT Martin (10-1) 6, Fairleigh Dickinson (1-7) 1
UT Martin scored one run in each of its six innings to earn the win in the first game of the day for both teams.
The Skyhawks scored on a double to left in the first and then a solo homer in the bottom of the second to make it 2-0 after two.
In the bottom of the third, the Skyhawks used a double steal to score their third run. Lauren Myers drew an one-out walk, stole second and then advance to third on an infield hit by Rachel Williams before scoring.
Allison Fulcher walked to lead off the fourth for UT Martin. Fletcher would come around to score on a single from Savannah Dodson. The Knights got out of the innings cutting down both runners as the Skyhawks tried another double steal.
Jaymee Jackson got the Knights first of the game in the fifth inning when singled to center. The Knights would get on the board in the fifth inning – 5-1 – when
Reanna Cervantes landed a hit on the outfield grass in left that scored
Francine Villalobos.
Kellie Natham – the next batter – singled to load the bases with one away. Sara Hooten came in to pitch for UT Martin for the starter Samantha Scott and got
Ana Hayes and Jackson to strike out to end the threat and the inning.
The Skyhawks added a run to make it 6-1 in the sixth on a Myers single to center.
Scott (2-0) pitched 5.1 innings to pick up the win for the Skyhawks.
Erica Johnson (1-2) allowed thee runs on five hits over three innings to be tagged with the loss for the Knights.
Game 2 | Saint Louis (4-4) 9, Fairleigh Dickinson (1-8) 1 F/5
Saint Louis scored three runs in the first, one in the second and three more in the fourth to open an 6-0 lead and earned the run-rule win by scoring an additional three runs in the top of the fifth.
The first two runs of the game for the Billikens came on a two-run home run by Mackenzie Peter. A fielder's choice plated the third run of the first inning.
After scoring in the second, Saint Louis got a two-RBI double from Allie Macfarlane with two-outs in the fourth inning.
With one out in the fifth, a walk and back-to-back singles loaded the bases for the Billikens. Alex Nickel walked to force in a run. After the Knights got the force out at home for the second out, Peter knocked in her third run of the game on a single up the middle.
Fairleigh Dickinson needed at least two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game.
Kassidy Neptune extended the game another hitter when she connected on her first home run of the season, a solo shot to right. Unfortunately, the next hitter for the Knights struck out to end the game.
Kaylea Chappelle went the distance for Saint Louis to pick up her second win of the season. For the Knights,
Baylee Ports suffered her first loss of the season after allowing seven runs over three and a third innings.
The Knights conclude the three-day tournament Sunday morning at 10 a.m. against the Broncos of Western Michigan.
