CLERMONT, Fla. - The Fairleigh Dickinson softball team led 3-0 after the top of the first inning by UT Chattanooga scored runs in the next three innings and in the fifth to win 6-4.
UT-Chattanooga (2-3) got one back from Fairleigh Dickinson (0-5) in the first inning after the Knights struck for three in the top of the first.
Kellie Natham had a two-RBI single in the top of the first inning that scored
Reanna Cervantes and
Cheryl Lopez. Natham now has six RBI this season to lead the Knights.
The Mocs tied the score in the second. A leadoff walk and back-to-back singles plated the first run. Maddy Adams, who singled earlier in the inning, scored on a sacrifice fly from Hayleigh Weissenbach to tie the game at three.
In the third, UT-Chattanooga scored two more runs to take the lead for the first time. Emma Sturdivant put a single through the right side to score Ashley Connor. The next batter was Amy Lewis, and she dropped a hit into center that scored Brook Womack to make it a 5-3 game.
Ana Hayes recorded her first RBI of the season and career in the top half of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly. Cervantes scored for the second time in the game after leading off the inning with a base hit.
UT-Chattanooga added an insurance run in the both of the fifth. Adams reached and advanced to second on a throwing error. A passed ball followed by another error allowed Adams to score and make it 6-4.
Baylee Ports came in relief of
Irene Herrera and pitched 3 1/3 innings without giving up an earned run. Ports also struck out four. Herrera (0-2) allowed twi earned over 2/3 of an inning.
Erica Johnson started for the Knights and allowed three runs over two innings. Offensively,
Madison Emerson went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Fairleigh Dickinson has 12 days before its next game, which will be against Northwestern State (La.) in Chattanooga, Tennessee on February 24.
