Men's Soccer Falls to Saint Francis Brooklyn 1-0

TEANECK, N.J. -  The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team was defeated by a final score of 1-0 Sunday evening at University Stadium against Saint Francis Brooklyn.  The loss moves the Knights to 6-4-1 (0-2 NEC) overall.  FDU will return to action Friday, October 13th when they head to Loretto, Pa. for a clash with St. Francis University.

Goalkeeper Jahmali Waite stopped five of six shots in net on the evening.  Freshman Jacob Labovitz led the Knights with three shots.

"I though we played very well and I thought we were unlucky not to win tonight," head coach Seth Roland said.  "I'm very proud of how the guys played and how we competed."

In a game that was played in the middle third of the field for much of the opening half, both teams were able to string together some sustained ball possession and push the pace up the pitch, however both defensive back lines were composed and solid, with prime scoring chances for either squad few and far between.

Federico Curbelo nearly put the Terriers up by a goal in the 33', gathering a ball at the top of the FDU box before turning and firing a hard strike that sailed high and wide of the outstretched Waite and out of danger.

Wojciech Piwowarczyk answered back for the Knights two minutes later after he won a high challenge and directed a header at the Terrier goal, however much like Curbelo his effort sailed wide of the net.

Both would continue to press, however the goalkeeping and defending remain flawless for both teams and the first ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Unsurprisingly, the second half began with even more pace and physicality than the first, as two of the best teams in the NEC tried to break the tie.

Dominick Falanga fired a strike just wide of the FDU net at the 46', and several minutes later the Knights back line were put on their heels once again after the Terriers were awarded a corner.  Luckily for FDU the back line of Piwowarczyk, Jamie Leddy, Alvaro Rubio, and Justin Depardieu was up to the task all evening and cleared the effort before SFBK could get a shot off.

Jacob Labovitz responded with two nice chances for the Knights three minutes apart, however both his efforts were thwarted by goalkeeper Robert Bazzichetto.

After another quality save by Waite on Curbelo in the 72', the Terriers manged to go up 1-0 after bit of bad luck for the Knights in close.  After an initial shot was lobbed into the box, the ensuing scrambled resulted in an FDU defender scoring an own-goal, giving SFBK the 1-0 lead with just under 20 minutes remaining in the match.

The Knights nearly leveled off a corner in the 84', however Bazzichetto manged to stop quick shots from Labovitz and Daniel Lasarte in quick succession.  They continued to search for an equalizer, however it never came and the Terriers held on for the 1-0 win.

The Knights limited Saint Francis Brooklyn to ten shots including six on goal, while FDU finished with eight including six on goal.

"As a team we've emphasized that we need to start defending more cohesively as a team, and I thought we did a much better job of that today," Roland said.
