BRONX, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team completed play at Fordham University on Sunday. The Knights competed against Fordham, Wagner College, and Queens College in the Fordham Four-in-the-Fall.
Adam Chan, Niclas Pietsch, and William Bourne each won the finals of the main draw they competed in. Chan won A singles, Pietsch won B singles, and Bourne grabbed the C singles draw. This is the first time this fall that a Knight won a main draw in singles.
In A singles, Chan and Moric Budinszky were each in the semifinals. Chan defeated Eric Poland of Wagner 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the finals. Budinszky took the first set from Max Green of Fordham 6-3, though Green got the upper advantage as he won the second and third set 6-4 and 10-6 to advance. In the finals, Chan defeated Green in straight sets to win 7-5, 6-4.
In B singles, the Knights had Pietsch and Andris Gudins competing in the semifinals. They both advanced as Gudins beat Lucas Martinez of Queens College 4-6, 6-3, 10-3. Pietsch won against Siddharth Anand of Wagner 6-2, 6-3. In the finals, a unique opportunity came as FDU teammates Gudins and Pietsch matched up against each other to see who would in in the finals. In an exciting match, Pietsch capitalized and defeated Gudins 6-4, 7-6(5) to earn the win.
In C singles, Maciej Autuch moved on to the finals as he defeated Ilya Kneppelhout of Wagner in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. In the finals, Autuch was defeated by Charlton Boyd of Wagner in a three-setter 6-1, 2-6, 11-9. Miki Nobuzawa won the consolation bracket as he defeated Fordham's Alex Makatsaria 8-4 and Camilo Arias of Queens College 8-5.
In D singles, Bourne began the day in the semifinals where he defeated Patricio Pons of Wagner 1-6, 6-1, 10-2. Then in the finals, Bourne took home the crown as he defeated Queens' Hugo Evangelista de Andrade 6-1, 6-2.
In A doubles, FDU's pair of Chan and Gudins matched up with Fabian Mauritzson and Lutwin de Macar of Fordham in the finals. The Rams pair got the upper hand as they took down the Knights pair 6-3. In the consolation final, Fairleigh Dickinson's Budinszky and Bourne dropped a close match to Fordham's Finn Kemper and Jeremy Chung 6-4.
In B doubles, the Knights pair of Pietsch and Nobuzawa were in the consolation finals going up against Fordham's Joseph Kavaloski and Steven Duka. Pietsch and Nobuzawa prevailed victorious and defeated the Rams' pair 6-0
DAY ONE
In A singles, Adam Chan and Moric Budinszky both moved on to the semifinals as they came away with wins over their opponents. Chan defeated Fabian Mauritzson of Fordham 8-5 and Budinszky won against Cosme Jubera of Queens College 8-3.
In B singles, Andris Gudins earned a tight victory over Wagner's Hans Ohmer 9-7. Niclas Pietsch was also victorious as he took down Finn Kemper of Fordham 8-5. Gudins and Pietsch will compete in the semifinals tomorrow.
In C singles, Maciej Autuch put on a strong showing as he downed Camilo Arias of Queens College 8-3 to move on to the semifinals. Wagner's Charlton Boyd got the upper hand on Miki Nobuzawa as Nobuzawa was defeated in a close 8-6 match.
In D singles, William Bourne received a bye in the first round and then competed against Joseph Kavaloski of Fordham in the quarterfinals. Bourne defeated Kavaloski 8-3 to advance.
In A doubles, the Knights pair of Chan and Gudins picked up a victory over Jeremy Chung and Kemper of Fordham 6-3. Then in the semifinals, they earned a 6-4 victory over Cosme Jubera and Roman Laga of Queens College. FDU's Budinszky and Bourne lost to Hans Ohmer and Ilya Kneppelhout of Wagner 6-3. However, Budinszky and Bourne would rebound by defeating Gabriel Mendez and Lucas Martinez of Queens College 7-6 in the consolation bracket.
In B doubles, Fairleigh Dickinson's pair of Pietsch and Nobuzawa dropped a tough 7-5 match to Fordham's Alex Makatsaria and Gabriel Mashaal 7-5. Then in the consolation bracket, Pietsch and Nobuzawa won against Camilo Arias and Miguel Bendito of Queens College 6-4.
Day two at Fordham will begin Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.
