Jones Sets FDU’s Career Three-Point Record

Box Score
EMMITSBURG, Md. – With his fifth three-pointer of the game, senior Mustafaa Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) set a new school record for career three-pointers with the 188th of his Fairleigh Dickinson career.   However, the Knights (7-20, 2-14 NEC) fell to Mount St. Mary's (14-13, 10-6 NEC) by a final score of 75-64.

Jones hit four three-pointers in the first half and tied Brad McClain's (Class of '92)  all-time FDU record of 187 on his fourth three-pointer of the game.  He broke the record just over four minutes into the second half connecting on a contested attempt from the right wing.

"It has kind of been on my mind all season and it has been a constant goal of mine," Jones said after the game.  "It means a lot to me.  It's another thing to put on my check list, to show that I can play the game of basketball and that I am worthy of being a Division I athlete."

"Playing at FDU has been a great experience, getting to play right away when I transferred here, I have enjoyed my time here.  I am going to miss it when it's over and FDU is definitely a place that I call home," Jones added.

Jones hit four three-pointers in the first half and finished the period with 12 of FDU's 24 points.  He added another three in the second half, the record breaker, and finished the game with 15 points.  He also had six rebounds and two assists.

"Obviously, I am not happy with the outcome of the game, but our guys fought and clawed our way back into that game," head coach Greg Herenda said after the game.  "I am just so happy for Mustafaa Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti).  I have coached many great players in my 31 years of coaching but Staf's story is truly special.  His work ethic, dedication and maturity lead him to this terrific record.  To get five in this one was the cherry on the cake."

"I just wish we could have pulled this one out for him, but regardless Mustafaa will always go down as a big time winner for me."

The Mount led 38-24 at the half.

The Knights rallied late in the second half and closed the game on a 19-10 run that cut a 20-point deficit to 11 by the final buzzer.  FDU pulled as close as eight points with 1:30 left to play, but Mount was able to push the lead back to 11 with free throws.

Freshman Stephan Jiggetts (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) led the Knights with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting.  Freshman Darian Anderson (Washington, D.C./St. John's College ) also reached double-digits with 13 points.
The duo did most of the scoring late in the second half and combined to score the final 12 FDU points of the game.

Mount's Byron Ashe led all players with 24 points.  The Mountaineers Gregory Graves posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The Knights shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field and 52.4% (11-21) from beyond the arc.  Jones led the three-point shooters with a five-of-seven effort.

Mount shot 43.4% (23-53) from the floor and 43.5% (10-23) from three-point range.   The Mountaineers were also 19-of-31 at the free throw line, including 15-of-23 in the second half.

The Knights held the Mountaineers without a field goal over the final 8:24 of the game, but Mount scored 10 points at the free throw line to maintain the lead.

The Mountaineers also held a 43-25 edge in rebounding.

Jones also holds FDU's career record for three-point attempts with 505.

The Knights will return to action on Thursday (Feb. 26) night against Sacred Heart and then close the season on Saturday (Feb. 28) against Central Connecticut.  That game will serve as Senior Day for Darius Stokes (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and Jones.
