TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team will begin its 2013 fall season this weekend at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational in Princeton, N.J. at the Lenz Tennis Center, or in the event of rain, Jadwin Gymnasium. Play will begin Friday morning.
Second-year head coach
Jonathan Buchman will take four players to the tournament, including two-time Northeast Conference Player of the Year, junior
Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School). The two-time defending NEC champs and NCAA Tournament participants will also have junior
Julien Philippe (Paris, France/Saint Honoré d’Eylau) and freshmen
Jacob Whalley ( Wirral, England/Calday Grange Grammar School) and Arnaud Valetin competing in the event. Valentin was coached by Buchman in high school.
Berzins begins his junior campaign after becoming the fourth player in league history to win back-to-back NEC Player of the Year awards and making history at the NCAA tournament by being the first NEC player to win a set in NCAA play. Berzins won the first set in the first round, 6-3, over Jarmere Jenkins of Virginia, the third-ranked player in the country. The Adazi, Latvia native has a perfect 14-0 record in NEC singles play and will look to keep up that unprecedented pace later in the season.
The Princeton-Farnsworth Invitational is essentially exhibition matches for all the teams involved and a great way to start the season. Other teams sending players are: Binghamton, Bucknell, Buffalo, Columbia, Cornell, Georgetown, Monmouth, NYIT, Penn, Princeton, St. John's, Temple and Yale. Â Â
The following weekend (September 20-22) FDU will travel to Flushing Meadows, N.Y. to take part in the USTA Invitational.
