WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team began play at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships on Friday, Oct. 19, at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.

The Knights sent two players to the qualifying rounds of singles with spots in the main draw at stake. Senior captain Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) began the day by beating Buffalo's Gopika Kapor, 6-3, 6-4, to survive and advance. In the following round, Morina was again a straight-set winner, beating Fordham's Bella Genkina, 6-3, 6-1 to earn a spot in the main draw. In tomorrow's round of 128, Morina will square off with Fairfield's Ryan Sharissa. The winner will play Columbia's Nicole Bartnik in the round of 64.

FDU's other singles player in action, sophomore Dina Guzairova (Sochi, Russia/Chelyabinsk #8 ), went 1-1 to just miss qualifying for the main draw. Guzairova defeated Sarah Bessen of Dartmouth by a score of 6-2, 6-4 in the first round, but was bested by Army's Jamila Paul, 6-3, 6-1, in the second round.

The ITA Regional Championships will continue tomorrow as Morina and fellow senior Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239 ) will play in the singles main draw.
