The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team split its final two matches on its spring break trip to Orlando, FL on Friday. The Knights defeated Colgate, 4-3, before losing to Florida Southern, 6-1. Florida Southern is currently ranked sixth in the Division II South Region rankings. FDU completes the trip with a 2-1 record and now has a 5-8 record on the season.
Against Colgate, the Knights had sophomores Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School), Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho), Guy Goren and freshman Guillermo Paiz (Guatemala City, Guatemala/The American School of Guatemala) all on the court playing their matches, knowing they all had to win in order to win the match. The first three came through, and Paiz gutted out his match to give FDU the victory.
"We came out a little flat in doubles, and I thought we gave the doubles point away against Colgate when we had a good shot at winning," said Head Coach Ira Miller. "I am very proud of their performance."
"The match against Florida Southern was tough. Overall, it was a good trip."
The Knights return to action on Thursday, March 24, when they travel to Philadelphia, PA to take on Saint Joseph's. First-serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
