The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team will look to pick up its second victory of the season Thursday night when they travel to Moon Township, PA to take on Robert Morris to open Northeast Conference play. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The game will mark the third of seven-straight away from Stratis Arena for the Knights.
The Knights are coming off their worst performance of the season this past Sunday at Albany as they fell 81-62. FDU held a 28-26 advantage with a little under four minutes to go before halftime, but Albany scored the final 13 points of the half and eventually went on a 25-8 run to take control of the game. Lonnie Hayes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Harmony Prep) led the Knights with 23 points on a career-high eight field goals (on 16 attempts), while making 4-of-8 three pointers. Junior
Kinu Rochford (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) added 11 points and seven rebounds, and junior
Melquan Bolding (Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Bishop Stepinac) tied a career high with five assists.
Scouting Robert Morris: The Colonials (4-2), picked to finish second in the Preseason NEC coaches poll, while picking up two of the 12 first place votes, are coming off their second loss of the season as they fell this past Sunday at crosstown-rival Pittsburgh, 81-71. The Panthers were ranked No. 16 in the nation in the contest which was the final game of the 2011 Philly Hoop Group Classic that featured Penn, James Madison, LaSalle and Pittsburgh. The Colonials lost at Penn (66-60), won at James Madison (82-77), defeated LaSalle (51-44) on a neutral floor in Philadelphia before losing at Pittsburgh. Robert Morris opened its season with an 83-57 home win over Rider before winning at Saint Peter's, 69-52.
Redshirt junior Velton Jones leads a trio of Colonials who score in double figures, averaging 17.8 points per game. He is also averaging 4.7 assists per game and has only turned the ball over 10 times. Redshirt sophomore Coron Williams is averaging 14.3 points per game and is shooting 42.4 percent (14-of-33) from three-point range and has knocked down 16-of-17 free throws. Redshirt Russell Johnson is averaging 10.3 points per game and leads the team in rebounds, averaging 6.0 per contest.
All-Time Series: This will be the 33rd meeting between the schools with the series dating back to January 5, 1980, a 69-63 Knights' win at home. Robert Morris holds a 33-30 advantage in the series, including victories in the last seven and eight of the last nine. The last win for FDU in the series took place on Feb. 1, 2007 as the Knights held on for a 84-79 win at the Colonials' place. Robert Morris has won 18 of its 27 home contests against the Knights.
