The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team won its second consecutive dual match as they defeated Queens College this afternoon, 8-1, in Queens, NY. Because Queens is a Division II school and was the host of the match, the score was out of nine points instead of seven. The Knights improve to 5-4 in dual meets this season.
In number one singles, senior Julija Korshunova (Riga, Latvia/Secondary School #75) defeated Laura Mocodeanu, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Elmine Botes (Heidelberg Gauteng, Rep. of South Africa/Hoer Volkskool and British International Distance College) defeated Erika Goldsmith in number two singles, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. Sophomore Julia Prantl (Benediktbeuern, Germany/GUS-Gymnasium Bad Tolz) won in number three singles over Somadi Druker, 6-2, 6-2. In number four singles, freshman Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) defeated Maria Mendes, 6-0, 6-4. Senior Ksenia Chernyshova (Moscow, Russia/Secondary School Korolev) won over Taylor Barber in number five singles, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4. Senior Jessica DeCarlos (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) won in number six singles over Daniela Celi, 6-1, 6-2.
In number one doubles action, Botes and Korshunova defeated Goldsmith and Druker, 8-6. The tandem of Prantl and Morina won, 8-1, in number two doubles over Mocodeanu and Barber. Chernyshova and junior Dzana Ferhatbegovic (Malmo, Sweden/Latin School) lost in number three doubles to Celi and Mendes, 8-6.
"We all played very well," said senior co-captain Ksenia Chernyshova (Moscow, Russia/Secondary School Korolev). "We are looking forward to our spring break trip to Orlando, and we expect to win all of our matches."
The Knights return to action on Monday, March 15, as they travel to Orlando, FL to play South Carolina State in the first of three matches on their spring break trip. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The Knights will also play Morehead State on the 16th at 12:30 p.m. and Colgate on the 17th at 6:30 p.m.
