The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team lost to St. John's this afternoon, 7-0, in a dual match in Jamaica, NY. The Knights fall to 2-1 in dual matches for the 2009-10 season.
In number one singles, sophomore Dom Hemy lost, 6-3, 6-2, to Pavel Cerny. Freshman Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) lost to Milo Hauk in number two singles, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) lost in number three singles to Stefan Bojic, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. In number four singles, freshman Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) lost to Martin Kosut, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Freshman Sven Sjoerds (Gendt, Netherlands/Over Betuwe College Bemmel) lost to Mike Lampa in number five singles, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Andrew Denny (Bingley, England/Bradford Grammar) lost in number six singles, 6-3, 6-1, to Dustin Goldenberg.
In number one doubles action, Skvarka and sophomore Marco Jemersic (Zagreb, Croatia/X Gimnazija Ivan Supek) defeated Hauk and Bojic, 8-4. The tandem of Sjoerds and Denny lost, 9-7, in number two doubles, to Cerny and Lampa. Shams and Gricheno lost in number three doubles to Kosut and Derek Wallensteen, 8-1.
"This was a tough match against a good team," said Head Coach Ira Miller. "The more matches we play, the stronger we will be."
The Knights return to action next Friday, February 12, as they travel to Queens, NY to take on Queens College at 12:00 p.m.
