The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team finished 1-1 on a road trip this weekend in upstate New York. In Ithaca, NY on Saturday, Cornell defeated the squad, 5-2. On Sunday, the team pulled off an upset in West Point, NY as they defeated Army, 4-3. Army was 14-0 versus the Knights since 1986 in dual matches. The team is now 4-2 in dual matches this season.
In the match versus Cornell, sophomore Dom Hemy lost in number one singles to Jon Jaklitsch, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) was defeated by Andy Gauthier in number two singles, 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) lost in number three singles to Jon Fife, 6-4, 6-4. In number four singles, freshman Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) defeated Mirza Klis, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. Freshman Sven Sjoerds (Gendt, Netherlands/Over Betuwe College Bemmel) defeated Evan Bernstein in number five singles, 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) was defeated by Richard Offut, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, in number six singles.
In number one doubles action, Skvarka and Jemersic lost, 8-5, to Jaklitsch and Klis. The tandem of Sjoerds and Shams won, 8-4, in number two doubles, over Fife and Bernstein. In number three doubles, Dom Hemy and Gricheno lost, 8-5, to Gauthier and Charles Quay.
"The guys played really tough," said Assistant Coach Mark Klysner. "I loved the intensity they showed and their progression during the match."
In the match versus Army, Dom Hemy lost in number one singles to Gary Kushnirovich, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Skvarka defeated Chris Albornoz in number two singles, 6-0, 6-3. Shams won in number three singles versus Josh Krieter, 6-3, 6-3. In number four singles, Gricheno was defeated by Alex Holland, 6-3, 6-3. Sjoerds defeated Andrew Clark in number five singles, 6-2, 6-2. Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) defeated Bruno Lucivero, 6-3, 6-4, in number six singles.
In number one doubles action, Skvarka and Jemersic lost, 8-5, to Albornoz and Lucivero. Sjoerds and Shams lost, 8-4, in number two doubles to Kushnirovich and Donald Van Velzer. In number three doubles, Dom Hemy and Gricheno lost, 8-4, to Clark and Holland.
"It was a great day for FDU tennis," said Head Coach Ira Miller. "Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) won his final match to give us the victory. We are going to build on this performance. We have some great matches coming up."
The team returns to action next Sunday as they travel to Yale to take on Marist and Stony Brook. Times are still to be determined for the matches.
