Women?s Tennis Advances in NEC Tournament

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's tennis team cruised past sixth-seeded Monmouth University, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Tournament, Friday, April 17 in West Windsor, NJ.  At the Mercer County Tennis Center, the Knights (6-16) clipped their Garden State rival for the second time this season.

Freshman Julia Prantl (Benediktbeuern, Germany/GUS-Gymnasium Bad Tolz) and junior Ksenia Chernyshova (Moscow, Russia/Secondary School Korolev) put together an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles versus Kaitlin Gallagher and Sarah Ragan.  Junior Julija Korshunova (Riga, Latvia/Secondary School #75) and classmate Jessica DeCarlos (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) then shutout Jessica Slinger and Diane Washer in second doubles, 8-0, en route to locking down the point.

Up 7-2 in No. 3 doubles, sophomores Jinny DeCarlos (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) and Christina Martine (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) were not given the chance to finish off Katie Tierney and Kristen Hoffman.

“We came out strong in the doubles and carried that momentum to the singles,” Head Coach Ira Miller said.  “This was a good win against a quality team.  We're really looking forward to the semifinals tomorrow.”

Korshunova disposed of Ragan in first doubles, 6-0, 6-2, while FDU won in straight sets in the third and fourth positions.  Chernyshova defeated Slinger and Je. DeCarlos topped Tierney, thus the match was clinched.

When the match was halted, Prantl was up on Gallagher, 6-3, 3-0, in No. 2 singles.  Martine was in command, 6-0, 5-1, over Kelly Friedrich.

Monmouth was sent to the consolation bracket with a 6-14 overall record.

The Knights will take on second-seeded Long Island University, who beat No. 7 Saint Francis University (PA), 5-0.  The semifinal match is set for 9:00 a.m., Saturday, April 18.  The Blackbirds won the two teams' initial meeting this season, 6-1, on April 5.
