The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team recorded a 3-2 win at Long Island on Friday afternoon to improve to 7-8-1 on the season, including a 4-3-1 Northeast Conference record. The Blackbirds fall to 6-10-5, with a 3-5 mark in league play.
Paul King (New Castle, England/Monkseaton) started the scoring early, finding the back of the net in the eighth minute as he fired from 14 yards out to put the Knights ahead. The goal was King's fifth of the season.
Twenty minutes later, King started another scoring opportunity as he dished the ball to Fernando Huthmacher, who sent it in from 20 yards out to record his third goal this season. Long Island knocked the ball in for an own goal in the 32nd minute to send the Knights into the half with a 3-0 lead.
The Blackbirds scored a pair of goals in the second half, but it wasn't enough as FDU took the win. Long Island scored in the 57th minute as Jakeem Johnson headed in a rebound to put LIU on the board.
Juan Lanza scored from a yard out in the 82nd minute, off a header from Johnson.
Long Island held an edge in corner kicks, 6-5, and shots, 13-8.
Majdi Zaineh (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) played the first 57 minutes between the posts for the Knights, grabbing four saves. Juho Illi (Nastola, Finland/) logged over 33 minutes in goal for the Knights.
Adam Janssen played the first half in goal for LIU, grabbing two saves, while John Connolly finished out the game, making one save.
"I'm proud of the guys for the hard-fought, well-deserved victory today," said Head Coach Seth Roland. "It is great that we take home three points."
The Knights are back in action at St. Francis NY on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1:00 p.m.
