1966 Men’s Golf
This is the best golf team Bob Metz coached during his long tenure at FDU. The team won the Metropolitan Golf Association's Intercollegiate Championship May 3, 1966 at the North Jersey Country Club in Wayne. They upset Princeton at the Championship. Hall of Famer Rusty Spahr (75) was the individual champion and Ralph Bender (78) was in a three-way tie for runner-up, as FDU took the top two places in a field of 41 colleges and 148 players. Other members of that team were Joe DeMarco, Rick Snyder and Bill Blanchfield. It marked the first time that FDU won this tournament and Spahr was only the second FDU player to capture individual honors. Team Members: Head Coach Bob Metz, Rusty Spahr, Ralph Bender, Rich Snyder, Bill Blanchfield, Joe DeMarco, Jeff Kravat, Jeff Smith, Otto Vitale, Don Keller, R. Kaufman.
