Debbie Tavares competed with the FDU women’s fencing team from 1977-80. She was a three-time team Most Valuable Player, earning the honor in 1978, 1979 and 1980, while earning All-American honors in 1979 as she helped the Knights to a ninth place finish at the NIWFA national championships and a New Jersey State championship. As a senior in 1980, Tavares won the New Jersey State Championships individual title, set a program record with 43 consecutive wins and finished the year with a .880 winning percentage as FDU placed eighth at the NIWFA national championships and captured another New Jersey State crown.
