One of the most prolific scorers in program history, Carlos Merchan helped lead the men's soccer team to a combined 40-12-3 record, a .755 winning percentage and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in 1974 and 1975.
In 1974 he was named to the New Jersey Collegiate All-Star squad after the team earned a number one ranking in the state of New Jersey. The 1975 squad became just the second team in program history to win an NCAA Tournament game, defeating Bucknell 1-0 in overtime. Following that season Merchan was named the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Soccer Conference's Division I Player of the Year and became only the fourth player in program history to be named All-American.
In 1976 Merchan tied what was then a single-season school record with 22 goals. He finished his career ranked second all-time at Fairleigh Dickinson with 62 goals and 139 points.
