Hired in 1978 as the second head coach in University history, Russ Rogers stands as the most successful track and field coach in school history. Pioneering the women’s program in 1980, Rogers served as the head coach of both programs until 1986 when Candy Young took over the women’s program. Under Rogers’ tutelage, athletes set and still hold 46 Fairleigh Dickinson records – 22 Men’s Indoor, 17 Men’s Outdoor; three Women’s Indoor and four Women’s Outdoor. Rogers trained unprecedented talent including: Jama Aden (All-America; 2-time NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Qualifier (1982-83); Oliver Alves (NCAA 1980); Elliott Bikani (IC4A Champion 1985-86, NCAA Qualifier 1985); Solomon Chebor (10-time All-America; NCAA Champion 1980 and 1981, FDU Hall of Fame); James Igohe (1983 Met Champion, 1983 NCAA Qualifier); Franklin Jacobs (Indoor High Jump World Record Holder, 3-time NCAA high jump champion, Guiness Book of World Record holder, Millrose Games Most Outstanding Performer, FDU Hall of Fame); Richard Ouma (1981 IC4A Champion, 4-time NCAA qualifier); Ruthven Prithwie (1983 IC4A Champion); Ephraim Serrette (1981 IC4A Champion, 1981 NCAA 3rd place); Michael Wasko (US Olympic Team- Bobsled, FDU Hall of Fame); Candy Young Sanders (1980 US Olympic Team, 8-time All-America, 1983 NCAA Indoor Champion, 1984 NCAA Indoor Champion, 1983 NCAA Outdoor Second Place, 1984 NCAA Outdoor Second Place, 1979 Pan Am Team, Co-World Indoor Record Holder, American Indoor Record Holder, FDU Hall of Fame). Rogers guided the men’s program to its first NEC Title in 1988 and was an assistant for the United States Olympic Team that same year. Rogers was the head coach of dual meet international teams in 1974, 1978, and 1985, in addition to the 1985 World Cup Championships. He coached the relay squad composed of Carl Lewis, Willie Gault, Calvin Smith and Emmitt King to the 4x800 World Record at the 1983 World Championships.
