Head Softball Coach Candi Letts

Candi Letts

Candi Letts was named Head Coach of the Fairleigh Dickinson University Softball team on Jan. 22, 2013. During her second season, Letts led the Knights to their first-ever Northeast Conference Tournament, as FDU finished the season 21-21 and recorded a program-record 11 conference wins (against five defeats) en route to finishing in a tie for second place and earning the #3 seed in the conference tournament.

Letts joined the Knights with 24 years of Division I coaching experience, including head coaching stints at Utah State, Ole Miss and Colorado State.  She most recently served as the Associate Head Coach at the University of California – Riverside.

Prior to serving as associate head coach, Letts was an assistant at UC – Riverside for three years.  At UC – Riverside, Letts was primarily responsible for teaching skill and strategy to the pitching rotation, while also implementing hitting techniques and defensive strategies.  She organized Highlander camps and clinics and helped recruit strong student-athletes to compete in the Big West Conference.

During her time at Utah State, Letts coached the first three All-WAC performers in the program's history, along with 16 All-WAC Academic honorees.  Her 2007 squad boasted the highest team batting average (.253) since the 1999 season and the 2008 version bettered that hitting performance with a .264 average. The 2007 pitching rotation also recorded the most strikeouts (235) for an Aggies team since the 2002 campaign.

Prior to taking over at Utah State, Letts was an assistant coach at Northern Illinois from 2005-06 under head coach Donna Martin.

From 1999-2005, Letts led the team at the University of Mississippi by taking over the head coaching reins in the program's third year of existence.  After three 20-win campaigns in her first six years with the Rebels, Letts guided Ole Miss to a record-setting 30-win season.  The 30-28 season still stands at the only Rebel team to record 30 wins and is set as the highest winning percentage of any Rebel team.

Letts’ first head coach position was at Colorado State University from 1994-1998.  Under her direction, the Rams amassed a 160-106-1 (.602) record, captured a WAC Championship in 1997 and finished ninth in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) final poll.  Letts was named WAC Coach of the Year and West Region Coach of the Year during the 1997 season.

Letts began her coaching career at her alma mater, Creighton University, where she was an assistant coach under Mary Higgins from 1988-1993. In 1991, Letts was on the sideline during Creighton’s 31-inning battle against Utah – the longest game in NCAA softball history.  During Letts’ time at Creighton, the Bluejays advanced to the NCAA Regional twice and were ranked among the top-20 three times.

Letts brings a wealth of postseason experience to FDU.  As an athlete, Letts helped Creighton University to three consecutive College World Series.  As a 1983 graduate of Creighton, Letts led the Bluejays in the circle for four seasons.  During her playing career, Lets recorded a 0.76 ERA, 43 victories, 16 saves and 276 strikeouts.  In 1982, Letts led the nation with nine saves, a mark that still ranks as the ninth highest single-season total in NCAA history.

A native of Manchester, Iowa, Letts was inducted into the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Pitchers Hall of Fame in 1980 and into the Iowa Girls High School Softball Hall of Fame in 1996.
