FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y.-- After a strong second day at the USTA Invitational on Saturday, the Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team still has three singles players and a doubles team in contention.
Freshman
Celine Maier (Nuremberg, Germany /Bertolt-Brecht-Schule Nuremberg) turned in a 2-0 day with a first round win in Flight H over NJIT's Carolina Zanotta 6-2, 5-7, 10-1. In the quarterfinals, Maier was again victorious over Nancy Zonneveld of LIU Brooklyn, 6-3, 6-0.
Junior
Manuela Leme (Varginha, Brazil/E.E. Antania Alves Cruz) defeated Army's Maya Parker, 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round then took down Hannah Zangari of Providence College, 6-2, 6-0 in Flight I. Freshman
Nicole Chis (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park) was also successful in Flight I. She first beat Morgan State's Chelsi Russell, 6-4, 2-6, 12-10. In the quarterfinals, she took down Fairfield's Carolina Koladzyn, 6-2, 6-2. Both Leme and Chis will compete in tomorrow's semifinal round.
Playing in the fourth flight of doubles, Leme and Chis teamed up to defeat Army's Maya Parker and Gabriella Spindler, 9-7, in the round of 16.
Senior
Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) beat Seton Hall Julia Keenan in the round of 16 of Flight G singles. Her run came to an end in the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Amy Li of Columbia.
